Al Kirby, Bush Pilot, 1973
What you see here, is a printed example of my Al Kirby, Bush Pilot comic strip, published one day before my 18th birthday. It ran in a free, weekly, advertising newspaper, The Great Lander, for about a year from 1973-74. I was thrilled to be doing what I loved most, writing and drawing an action-adventure comic strip in the tradition of Milton Caniff's Terry and the Pirates and Noel Sickles' Scorchy Smith. I was still self-taught at this point, so while quality of the strip is very uneven, it was a great experience. On a tangent, I love the juxtaposition of the seventies era Alaskan babe showcased in a snow tire ad.
