The art critic Marla Berg once said of Sacha Moldovan (1901-1982), "Had van Gogh painted Matisse's pictures while dreaming of Chagall, the result would have been the works of Sacha Moldovan."
His friends, Henri Matisse, Chaim Soutine, and Pierre Bonnard all influenced his work profoundly.
At the age of 14, his family emigrated from Russia and settled in New York's lower East Side, then a center of new foreign immigrants and entrepreneurial and creative energy. In 1919, he enrolled in the Cooper Union School of Art and in 1920 at the National Academy of Design. Visiting Paris in 1922, he met and became life-long friends with the renowned expressionist, Chaim Soutine.
He moved to Paris in 1925 and exhibited his works in many well known galleries of the time including Salon des Tulleries, the Societe des Artists Independents, Galeries Carmine, and the Galerie de la Renaissance Exhibitions where his paintings were widely acclaimed.
