Paul Klee "Cat and Bird" 1928

A wonderful gesture drawing!

Cat and Bird, Date: 1928, Medium: Oil and ink on gessoed canvas, mounted on wood, Dimensions: 15: x 21," Credit Line::Sidney and Harriet Janis Collection Fund and gift of Suzy Prudden and Joan H. Meijer in memory of F. H. Hirschland, MoMA Number:300.1975

From:

Paul Klee's work is simple and complicated at same time. Klee was a Swiss artist/teacher from the early 1900s who liked to transform the things he saw into simple geometric shapes. His "Cat and Bird” masterwork from 1928 is a splendid example of this philosophy.

Klee grew up in a musical family and was himself a violinist. After much hesitation he chose to study art -- not music -- and he attended the Munich Academy in 1900. Klee loved to use continuous lines in his work -- note that the cat's head and the bird were drawn with one continuous line.
