Fern Coppedge attended the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Art Students League in NYC, and also studied with Vincent DuMond, William Merritt Chase, John Carlson, Daniel Garber, and Henry Snell. She was associated with the New Hope school of Pennsylvania Impressionists, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and the "Group of Ten" -- an association of women artists that showed their work first in Philadelphia, and later, all over the country.

Often compared to the Fauves and the Post-Impressionists of Europe, Coppedge led an unconventional life. She was famous for her love of plein air painting -- it was common to see Coppedge trudging through deep snow to her next painting location -- wearing a big black bearskin coat with canvas and easel in hand.
